Life

Kubilius studied at Vilnius University from 1940 to 1946 and received his doctorate in 1951 under Juri Linnik at Leningrad State University ( geometry of prime numbers ). Then he was a lecturer in Vilnius. In 1957 he received his habilitation at the Steklov Institute in Moscow (Russian doctorate) and in 1958 became professor and rector of the University in Vilnius. He remained rector until 1991, but continued to teach as a professor afterwards.

During his time as rector, supported by his international reputation, he was able to promote the use of the Lithuanian language at the university and counteract "Russification" tendencies. From 1952 he was also at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and briefly head of its mathematics department, which was newly founded in 1956, before taking up his post as rector at the university. In the last years of his life he was a senior scientist at the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science, which used to belong to the Academy, but is now independent.

Scientifically, Kubilius was mainly active in the field of probabilistic number theory ( statistical theory of arithmetic functions ), where the inequality of Turán-Kubilius, which goes back to Paul Turán and him, is associated with his name .

Since 1962 he was a member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He was president of the Lithuanian Mathematical Society. From 1992 to 1996 he was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament . The universities of Greifswald , Prague , Salzburg and the University of Latvia awarded Kubilius honorary doctorates. He was the bearer of the order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.

Jonas Kubilius died on October 30, 2011 and was buried in the Antakalnis cemetery in Vilnius .
