Joost Lagendijk
Jan Joost Lagendijk (born June 8, 1957 in Roosendaal ) is a Dutch politician of the GroenLinks party . He has lived in Turkey since 2009.
Life
After finishing school, Lagendijk studied history at the University of Utrecht and graduated in 1985. In addition to his studies, Lagendijk worked as a salesman in the book trade of the Van Gennep publishing house . Lagendijk got involved politically and became a member of the Pacifist Socialist Party (PSP) and he succeeded in entering the Second Chamber of the States General . Lagendijk was elected vice-chairman of the PSP and was the international secretary of the PSP from 1987 to 1991. Politically, he accompanied the merger of the PSP to form the GroenLinks party , of which he was international secretary from 1991 to 1994. Lagerdijk founded De Helling magazine with others in 1987 , for which he wrote articles until 1994. Since 1994 he has worked as a writer for Babylon-De Geus .
In 1998 he succeeded in entering the European Parliament as a member of the GroenLinks , to which he was a member until 2009. From 2002 he was Vice-President of the Turkey Delegation of the European Parliament.
Lagendijk has been married to the Turkish journalist Nevin Sungur since October 28, 2006. The wedding took place under high media observation in Istanbul in the Hotel Pera Palas . While Lagendijk is rather unknown to the public in the Netherlands and can live anonymously in Brussels, he is considered a popular hero with rock star status in Turkey, "Mr. Europe", "son-in-law" or "brother-in-law of all Turks" and "friend of Turkey" ". Since July 2009 he has been a consultant at the Istanbul Policy Center of Sabancı University in Istanbul and is a member of the advisory board of the European Policy Center think tank and the European Transatlantic Advisory Board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation . He has been a columnist for Today's Zaman and Zaman newspapers since October 2010 .
Political positions
In the eighties and nineties Lagendijk had contacts with Kurdish and Turkish refugees in the Netherlands, was a declared opponent of Turkey and called for a holiday boycott against the country. His views changed when he joined the EP's Turkish delegation in 2002. Since 2001, Lagendijk has published three books with his EP colleague Jan Marinus Wiersma on the enlargement and foreign policy of the European Union.
In 2006, Lagendijk criticized the position of the Turkish military in Turkey. Like the Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk , he was then sued by Turkish ultra-nationalists for insulting Turkishness (Art. 301 TCK). The proceedings against the MEPs were dropped.
