The honorary citizenship is the highest honor the city of Brandenburg an der Havel .

According to §2 of the city's rules of honor , it can be awarded to people who have made a special contribution to them. The special merits can be justified by extraordinary achievements or special commitment to the development, well-being and reputation of the city and its citizens. It can be an outstanding life's work that is connected with the city, or a retail trade that goes far beyond the usual framework and demonstrably serves the common good and is connected with the city. The special merits can be in local, economic, cultural, sporting, scientific, political, social or humanitarian areas. The personality to be honored does not have to be a citizen of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel.

The mayor appoints an honorary citizen by resolution of the city council. The honorary citizens are invited to special public events in the city. You have the right to use city facilities such as city museums, libraries, archives, parking lots, communal cultural facilities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools as well as the events and exhibitions organized by the city free of charge. With the consent of the relatives, the city takes over the care of the grave of a deceased honorary citizen in a cemetery in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel. The honorary citizenship can be withdrawn if the honorary citizen has proven to be unworthy by his behavior.

Since 1827 a total of 30 people have received this honor. In addition, Adolf Hitler in 1933, Wilhelm Kube in 1934 , and Ernst Albert Altenkirch in 1976 were made honorary citizens. These honors were revoked again in 1991 by a resolution of the city council.
