Karl Julius von Groß (born November 21, 1812 in Darkehmen , † September 18, 1881 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Karl Julius was the son of Karl Ludwig Friedrich von Groß (born March 15, 1785 in Friedrichshof; † November 10, 1842 in Tapiau ) and his wife Julie Friederike, born von Schwarzhoff. His father was the captain and commander of the II. Division of the 1st Invalid Company.

As a result of the Prussian name and coat of arms association with the von Schwarzhoff family , from February 6, 1835, he carried the name of Groß called von Schwarzhoff .

Military career

Groß attended the old town high school in Königsberg and then went to the cadet schools in Kulm and Berlin. On August 13, 1830, Groß was transferred to the 5th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a Second Lieutenant . From October 1833 to May 20, 1836 he graduated from the General War School . In the further course of his military career, Groß took over the 2nd Infantry Regiment in May 1860 and was promoted to colonel on October 18, 1861 in this position . From April 18, 1865, Groß commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade and two months later became major general .

In 1866, Groß took part in the war against Austria in Bohemia . He was involved in the battle of Münchengrätz , the Battle of Königgrätz and the battle near Blumenau and was awarded the order Pour le Mérite for his achievements on September 20, 1866 . After the peace agreement he was sent to Hanover , where he organized the Landwehr .

When the Franco-Prussian War broke out in July 1870, Gross became Lieutenant General and Commander of the 7th Infantry Division , with which he captured 28 guns and took 1,500 prisoners in the Battle of Beaumont . He later repulsed enemy attacks repeatedly off Paris .

Between March 27, 1873 and October 17, 1881, Groß was the commanding general of III. Army Corps in Berlin, in 1875 he was appointed General of the Infantry.

Honors

Since September 20, 1876, Groß was chief of the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich I." (4th East Prussian) No. 5. He was also the owner of the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring, the Alexander Newski Order and Knight of the Black Eagle Order . After his death, Kaiser Wilhelm II ordered on August 29, 1882 that the new fortress located at Altemheimer Hof south of Strasbourg should be named Fort Schwarzhoff.

Groß married Berta Maria Wilhelmine von Lettow (born April 7, 1821 in Torgau ; † February 2, 1910 in Berlin) in Labuhn on September 21, 1842 . The following children were born from the marriage:
