The European Policy Center (EPC) is an independent, not-for-profit think tank based in Brussels that works on European policy issues and was founded in 1997.

Field of activity

Herman Van Rompuy is President of the EPC. The general director of the EPC is the German economist Fabian Zuleeg. The director of studies is the German-Greek political scientist and economist Janis A. Emmanouilidis. In addition, 21 scientists work at the EPC. They conduct research and analysis, organize expert meetings and events with relevant stakeholders in the field of European and international politics and publish publications online and in print. The EPC also works with 18 consultants and 12 academic fellows.

The work of the EPC is organized in five programs:

  • European politics and institutions (Head: Corina Stratulat, Senior Policy Analyst)
  • European Migration and Diversity (Head: Marie de Somer, Senior Policy Analyst)
  • Sustainable prosperity for Europe (Head: Annika Hedberg, Senior Policy Analyst)
  • Social Europe and Wellbeing (Head: Claire Dhéret, Senior Policy Analyst)
  • Europe in the World (Head: Giovanni Grevi, Senior Fellow)

Guest speakers at the EPC included Margaret Chan , Director General of the World Health Organization; Jacques Delors , former President of the European Commission; Mario Draghi , President of the European Central Bank; Jean-Claude Juncker , President of the European Commission; Christine Lagarde , Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund; Martin Schulz , former President of the European Parliament; Salil Shetty , Secretary General of Amnesty International; Donald Tusk , President of the European Council, as well as other high-level international ministers and officials.

financing

The funding comes from various sources: the King Baudouin Foundation from Belgium, the Adessium Foundation from the Netherlands and Stiftung Mercator from Germany are strategic partners of the EPC. In addition, membership fees and third-party funds from the EU and other organizations raised within the framework of projects help finance the work of the EPC. Herman Van Rompuy is President and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the EPC, which includes many other well-known European personalities: Joaquin Almunia , Maria Joào Rodrigues , Lord Kerr of Kinlochard, Danuta Hübner , Janez Potočnik , André Sapir , Wolfgang Schüssel , Rita Süssmuth and Jacek Saryusz- Wolski .

The general meeting is chaired by Fabio Colsasanti, the former Director General for Information Society and Media of the European Commission. Paul Skytte Christoffersen, former Danish ambassador to Belgium and permanent representative of Denmark to the EU, chairs the board.

Former presidents included Peter Sutherland (1998–2011) and Philippe Maystedt (2011–2014). Former chairpersons of the main board included Hywel Ceri Jones, founder of the ERASMUS program, Antonio Vitorino , former EU Commissioner and Meglena Kunewa , former EU Commissioner.

Members

The EPC has approximately 350 members from a wide range of different organizations, including diplomatic missions, corporations, non-governmental organizations, and regional and local authorities. The EPC members actively contribute to the panel discussions, workshops, task forces and roundtable discussions at the EPC.
