Jordi Casals

Jordi Casals (* 1973 in Terrassa ) is a Catalan choir director and conductor .

Life

Jordi Casals received his first musical training from his father, an organist and choir director, in the form of piano lessons . In addition, he was soprano soloist with the boys' choir in the Benedictine monastery in Montserrat . Later he not only studied piano and singing at the conservatory in his hometown, but also studied journalism at the Universitat Autònoma in Barcelona .

From 1999 to 2003 he studied conducting at the Vienna Conservatory with Reinhard Schwarz and Georg Mark and choir conducting with Guido Mancusi. He completed his studies with distinction during a concert with the RSO Vienna .

From 1992 he founded and directed various choirs in his home country and in Austria . Among other things, he was director of the Unisono Choir Vienna , and since 2002 he has directed the Marienchor and the Marienkirchenorchester in Perchtoldsdorf . At the same time he works as an assistant to Roberto Gini in Italy and Gianluca Capuano in France .

In 2003 and 2004 he assisted Guido Mancusi at the Vienna Conservatory, and in March 2006 he was appointed lecturer for choir and ensemble conducting at the Institute for Organ, Organ Research and Church Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

In addition, Jordi Casals has been working closely with Erwin Ortner , the artistic director of the Arnold Schoenberg Choir , since 2003 and is the choir director of this ensemble in opera productions at the Theater an der Wien and at renowned festivals ( Aix-en-Provence , Edinburgh Festival , Luxembourg , Baden -Bathing ).

He has guest conductors with various choirs and orchestras (World Voices, World Chamber Choir, Barcelona Madrigal Choir, Arnold Schoenberg Choir, Terrassa Chamber Orchestra, Andorra National Chamber Orchestra, Liceu Academy Orchestra). These took him to France, Italy, Germany , Andorra and Spain , with Georg Friedrich Handel's Messiah , Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Te Deum , Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat , Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's hymn of praise and world premieres such as the St. John Passion by Enric Ferrer .

  • 2nd prize (polyphony category) with the World Voices choir at the XXXIII. International Choir Competition (Tolosa, Spain, October 2001)
  • Winner of the Erwin Ortner Fund for the Promotion of Choral Music (Vienna, December 2002)
  • 2nd prize (category mixed choirs) with the Unisono Choir Vienna at the XXI. International Choir Competition Franz Schubert ( Wiener Konzerthaus , November 2004).
