Jordi de Sant Jordi ( ˈdʒɔɾði ðe ˈsaɲ ˈdʒɔɾði ) (* around 1398, † around 1424 ) is one of the most important poets of older Catalan literature .

life and work

Jordi de Sant Jordi was born in the Kingdom of Valencia , part of the Aragonese Empire , and was a contemporary of Ausiàs March . He became chamberlain at the court of King Alfonso the Magnanimous and was entrusted by him with various diplomatic missions. He was under the protection of the queen widow Margaret of Prades .

Under the leadership of King Alfonso, he took part in the Catalan expedition to Sardinia and Corsica in 1420 and stayed in the Kingdom of Naples in 1422/23 . There Jordi was captured by Francesco Sforza on May 30, 1423 . While in captivity, he wrote his poem Presoner ("Captured"). He died soon after his release around 1424.

His poetry is mainly linguistically influenced by the Provençal Trobador poetry and Petrarch and mainly revolves around the theme of love . So is his Ovid - adaptation Passio secundum Amoris Ovidium interspersed with bits and pieces from the Trobadorendichtung. He stands between the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance . His stramps (" blank verses ") also deal with love issues. In the 171 verses comprehensive prose -Schrift Los enuigs Jordi things lists that it had gotten. Lo canviador describes the business conduct of a money changer . It is possible that Joan Roís de Corella was influenced by him.

Jordi was in contact with Iñigo López de Mendoza , who dedicated the poem Coronacion de Mosén Jordi ("The Coronation of Mr. Jordi") to him.
