Jorge Preloran (born May 28, 1933 in Buenos Aires , † March 28, 2009 in Culver City ) was an Argentine - American documentary filmmaker.

Life

Preloran was born in Buenos Aires to an Argentine father and an Irish-American mother. After a first short film called Venganza (1954), he left Argentina and studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Film Studies . He graduated in 1961. With his dual citizenship , he served in the United States Armed Forces and was stationed in Germany. In 1961 his film career began with the Tinker Foundation, for which he made films about gauchos . With these films, he is considered a pioneer of ethnobiographical film, in which different ethnic groups are not portrayed as “primitive” and “exotic”, but rather individuals in their natural environment and with an open mind. His usual course of action included acquainting himself months in advance with the subject of his work and establishing a relationship and taking advice from those portrayed.

From 1963 to 1969 he mainly made films about Argentine folklore for the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán in the province of Tucumán . In 1969 he made Hermógenes Cayo ( Imaginero ), which is considered one of the ten best Argentinian films. In his long career he made more than 50 films. His film Luther Metke at 94 was nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 1981 Academy Awards.

Preloran taught at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television from 1976 to 1994. In 2007 he donated his life's work to the Smithsonian Institution's Human Studies Film Archives . He died on March 28, 2009 at the age of 75.
