José Ballivián (born May 5, 1805 in La Paz , † October 6, 1852 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Bolivian general in the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation War and 9th President of Bolivia from September 27, 1841 to December 23, 1847.

José Ballivián was born into a wealthy family to Jorge Ballivián and Isidora Segurola . As early as 1817 he took part in military exercises under the Spanish administrator of the city, Mariano Ricafort , and left his hometown, but returned the following year under Sánchez Lima .

In November 1841, he defeated the Peruvian General Agustín Gamarra at the Battle of Ingavi , thus preventing the Peruvian invasion of his homeland. This victory made him a national hero, so that he was offered the presidency that same year. However, he did not succeed in obtaining the support of the military , so that he could not form a stable government in the long term. In December 1847 he was overthrown from office and fled in January 1848 a. a. to Brazil , where he lived in exile until his death.

The Bolivian province of Ballivián in the Beni department bears his name in his honor. His son Adolfo Ballivián Coll also became President of Bolivia in 1873.
