José Calasanz Marqués
José Calasanz Marqués SDB - sometimes also Marquéz or Margués - written (born November 23, 1872 in Azanuy , † July 29, 1936 in Valencia ) was a Spanish religious priest who was beatified as a martyr together with 31 companions .
Life
In 1884, at the age of twelve, José Calasanz Marqués entered the Salesian house in Sarrià as a pupil, where he met Johannes Bosco on his trip to Barcelona in 1886 . Impressed by this, he decided to become a Salesian of Don Bosco himself and in 1890 made his first vows. After his philosophical and theological studies, he was ordained a priest in 1895 as the first Spanish Salesian of Don Bosco . He initially worked as the secretary of the later Superior General Don Philipp Rinaldi , who had been the Spanish Provincial since 1892. Then Calasanz became the College of Mataró and the Salesian work in the Antillesentrusted. After all, he was a provincial in Peru and Bolivia . On his return to Spain in 1925, he was appointed Provincial of the Terraconense Province, which includes Barcelona and Valencia.
From July 17, 1936, he preached the retreat in Valencia . On the morning of July 22nd, Republican militias entered the house and were arrested but released. They were not arrested again until the following days. Marqués was forced on July 29, 1936 with three other confreres to go to the bridge of St. Josephon, where Marquès was finally executed.
He was buried in the cemetery in the Benimaclet district of Valencia.

Joseph Calasanz Marqués was born on March 11, 2001 together with his 31 companions and 201 other Spanish martyrs by Pope John Paul II. Beatified .
The day of remembrance was set for September 22nd.
