Julio Junyer Padern

Julio Junyer Padern , also Juli Junyer i Padern SDB (born October 31, 1892 in Vilamaniscle , Alt Empordà , † April 26, 1938 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish religious priest who suffered martyrdom in the Spanish Civil War in 1938 .

Life

Born into a simple family, as a young man he decided to go to the College of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Girona and join the religious community . He attended the seminary in Campello ( Alicante province ). In 1912 he made his first religious profession. After studying theology , he was ordained a priest in 1921 . After all, he himself taught philosophy , literature and Gregorian chant in Girona and was responsible for the training and spiritual guidance of the order's offspring.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he fled to his native Vilamaniscle, where he was arrested by a militia group in March 1938. Due to the family relationship with the Republican mayor of the city, he was released. He returned to Girona and worked as an escape helper. When this was discovered, he was tried for espionage and high treason. The attempt to get a clemency petition from prison with the help of a released prisoner failed. He was sentenced to death on March 23, 1938, and shot on April 26, 1938 at 7:00 a.m. in the moat of the Montjuic Castle .

Adoration and Beatification

His body was transferred to the parish of Villamaniscle.

On March 11, 2001, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, along with other martyrs of the Spanish Civil War . The liturgical feast day is April 26th.
