Bauer , with full name José Carlos Bauer (born November 21, 1925 in São Paulo , † February 4, 2007 ibid) was a Brazilian soccer player and soccer coach . In his playing career he was a midfielder .
Life
José Carlos Bauer was born in São Paulo in 1925 as the son of a Swiss and an Afro-Brazilian. He spent most of his football career at São Paulo FC , with whom he won the Campeonato Paulista six times between 1943 and 1953 . He was considered one of the best players in São Paulo at the time. In total, he played 419 games for São Paulo and scored 16 goals. In 1954 he moved to Botafogo FR , where he ended his career the following year.
For the Brazilian national team Bauer denied 29 games and participated in the World Championships in 1950 and 1954 in part. He also won the Copa América with the Brazilian selection in 1949 .
After the end of his playing career, Bauer became a coach. In addition to engagements with Guadalajara in Mexico and Millonarios in Colombia , he also trained the association Associação Ferroviária de Esportes from Araraquara in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . On one of the club's trips to Mozambique , he saw the young Eusébio play and, as he continued his journey, told SL Benfica trainer Béla Guttmann about his skills at a chance meeting in a hairdressing salon in Lisbon - at least that's what one of the legends says.
Bauer died in 2007 at the age of 81.
