José Enrique Moyal

José Enrique Moyal (born October 1, 1910 in Jerusalem , † May 22, 1998 in Canberra ) was an Australian mathematician and physicist .

Life

He worked in the field of mathematical physics . He made a contribution to explaining the phase space with the help of statistical formulas and made suggestions regarding the Weyl quantization . His work also included special derivatives of the Poisson bracket and a reformulation of the Heisenberg picture .

He grew up in Palestine and studied in France. After his first professional positions in Belfast and Manchester, he came to Australia in 1958 and worked at the Australian National University . Then he went to Chicago to the Argonne National Laboratory before becoming a math professor at Macquarie University for five years . In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from the Australian National University. The Moyal Medal is named after him, an award from Macquarie University.
