The Catholic parish church of St. Gangolf in Mertloch , a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate , is a Romanesque pillar basilica from the second half of the 12th century. It is a protected architectural monument .

history

The church, consecrated to St. Gangolf , was first mentioned in 1318 in a deed of foundation. In 1533 the collegiate monastery of St. Kastor in Koblenz received the right of patronage for the church. In the 15th and 16th centuries chapels were added to the two side aisles and in the 18th century the windows of the side aisles were enlarged and re-glazed. In 1879 the nave was extended by a yoke to the west and the church tower was added.

Exterior construction

The church is plastered white. On the west facade of the bell tower rises dark quarry stone . The portal is on the south side of the church.

The church is laid out as a three-aisled pillar basilica and has extended over four bays since the expansion in 1879. The originally flat ceiling was replaced in the 13th century by a groin vault supported by wide belt arches . The latter, like the arcade arches, the vault borders, the shield arches and the triumphal arch on the choir, are highlighted in red and set off with white joints.

The baptistery in the north aisle is from the Gothic period. It has a reticulated vault with a keystone depicting Christ as the Man of Sorrows. The vault ribs rest on consoles , which are designed as angel busts with curly hair and wide spread wings. In their hands they hold shields with the instruments of Christ's passion . The stone carvings are attributed to a Koblenz workshop and the influence of the Leiden sculptor Nikolaus Gerhaert .

Holy grave
  • A special feature is the polygonal, late Gothic pulpit from 1465, which is attributed to Hermann Sander's workshop. It stands on an octagonal base and its fields are framed by a double round rod on a rotated base. One field is provided with a relief depicting Christ as the pulpit preacher, another field has an intertwined banner with the inscription: "ONE IS YOUR TEACHER".
  • The pillars of the main aisle arcades are decorated with newly gilded figures of saints. The oldest sculpture is an Anna herself from the 15th century. The baby Jesus and Mary, who are shown almost of the same age, are seated on St. Anne's lap.
  • The Pietà , St. Nicholas , at whose feet a wooden barrel with the three scholars he rescued , and St. Agathe , who presents her cut-off breasts on a plate, date from the Baroque period and were created by Heinrich Alken (1753–1827) .
  • The figure of Mary in front of the baroque high altar is dated to the 16th century and is attributed to a Cologne workshop.
  • In the side aisles there are two replicas of the Holy Sepulcher from the 14th and 15th centuries in wall niches . Both reliefs depicting Christ lying in the grave are carved into tufa slabs.
