José Gabriel Calderón Contreras (born July 15, 1919 in Bogotá , † March 15, 2006 in Cartago , Valle del Cauca ) was a Colombian Roman Catholic priest and bishop of Cartago for around 33 years .

Life

After visiting a seminary Calderón Contreras received the on 8 November 1942 ordination and then worked for several years as a priest in Bogota.

On December 18, 1958, he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Bogotá and at the same time appointed titular bishop of Victoriana . A few weeks later, on January 6, 1959, he was ordained bishop by the cardinal priest of Santa Maria in Vallicella , Paolo Cardinal Giobbe ; Co- consecrators were Antonio Samorè , then Secretary for Extraordinary Affairs of the Church, and Giuseppe Ferretto , Secretary of the College of Cardinals .

On April 26, 1962, he was appointed the first bishop of Cartago and held this office for almost 33 years until his resignation on April 19, 1995.

Calderón Contreras, who as a council father took part in all four session periods of the Second Vatican Council from October 11, 1962 to December 8, 1965, participated in several episcopal ordinations, including for Víctor Manuel López Forero (1977), Hernán Giraldo Jaramillo ( 1984) and Alfonso Cabezas Aristizábal (1988).

After his resignation, Luis Madrid Merlano became the new Bishop of Cartago.
