José Lai Hung-seng ( Chinese  黎 鴻昇 ; born January 14, 1946 in Taipa , Macau ) is a Chinese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Macau .

José Lai Hung-seng is the second Chinese bishop of the diocese and the first to be born in Macau. Besides John Tong Hon, he was the only Rome-recognized diocesan bishop in mainland China .

Life

José was born the tenth son of Joseph Paul Lai Sio-kei and Maria Celestina Tchoi Lao-mei.

On October 28, 1972, he received the sacrament of ordination .

On 23 January 2001 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To Coadjutor Bishop of Macau. He received his episcopal ordination on June 2nd of the same year by the Bishop of Macau, Domingos Lam Ka-Tseung ; Co- consecrators were his predecessors Arquimínio Rodrigues da Costa and John Tong Hon , auxiliary bishop in Hong Kong . His motto is: Scientia et virtus . On June 30, 2003, José Lai Hung-seng became Bishop of Macau after accepting the resignation of his predecessor, Domingos Lam Ka-Tseung, for reasons of age.

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on January 16, 2016.
