Taipa ( Chinese 氹仔 ) or the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo ( Chinese 嘉模堂區 ) is a district or Portuguese model one Freguesia in the former Concelho das Ilhas , and a former island of Macao , by land reclamation today with the neighboring island of Coloane connected is.

In addition to the old town , there are also modern buildings and facilities as well as apartment blocks, the Macau Olympic Complex , the University of Macau and Macau Airport . Following the Portuguese model, the freguesia bears the name of the Catholic Church in the district, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo , which is named according to the honorary title of Our Lady on Mount Carmel of Our Lady .

geography

Taipa is 2.5 km south of the actual Macau peninsula and is connected to it by three bridges. The land that has arisen since Macau was returned to the People's Republic of China , the Cotai zone , connects the island of Coloane in the south with Taipa. Taipa itself also originally consisted of two individual islands: Big and Small Taipa, each with its own mountain. Today the names of the two mountains are reminiscent of the two former islands: In the west lies the Taipa Pequena with a height of 110 meters, while in the east the Taipa Grande, which is 158 meters higher, is significantly higher. Today's Macau Airport was also built in the sea and is located off the old east coast of Taipa.

As part of the Novos Aterros Urbanos de Macau , several new land reclamations are being created on the north coast of Taipa. According to this, two offshore islands are to be created in the western part of the north coast, Zones C and D. The two parts of Zone E at the port of Taipa and Macau Airport, i.e. further east, have already been completed and partially developed. Statistically, the area of the University of Macau , which is leased area in mainland China's Zhuhai, is often counted to the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo.

history

The Portuguese annexed Taipa in 1851. On June 2, 1968, Taipa was connected to the neighboring island of Coloane by an artificial isthmus with a length of 2,200 meters and a width of 7 meters. Until it was returned to China in 1999, it remained a rural area with duck farms and a few boatyards. Then the building boom followed with a number of prefabricated buildings .

traffic

Macau Airport and Taipa Harbor mean that the district is well connected beyond Macau's borders. Three bridges also connect Taipa to the road network of the Macau peninsula in the north, while the Cotai Strip connects to Coloane and runs on the former isthmus. With the opening of the first phase of the Macau Light Rapid Transit , a light rail will run through the Taipa district and the Cotai zone , which will later be extended to Coloane and the Macau peninsula.

Attractions

The old village of Taipa is located on the old south coast of the island, where today the border to Cotai , created by land reclamation , runs. This old town area is now a popular tourist destination in Macau with historic Portuguese-Chinese culture and numerous restaurants . Here you will also find the Casas-Museu da Taipa , the active eponymous church Nossa Senhora do Carmo ( Chinese嘉 模 聖母 堂) built in 1885 and four small Buddhist temples : the Tin Hau Temple , the I Leng Temple , the Pak -Tai Temple and the Kun-Iam Temple .
