The international airport Macau International Airport ( Portuguese Aeroporto Internacional de Macau ) is the only traffic airport of China's Special Administrative Region of Macau .

history

Map of Macau (airport on the right)

The airport was built in the time when Macau was still part of the Portuguese territory. It should provide the opportunity to travel by plane without having to enter Chinese territory. Up to now there was no efficient airport in Macau.

Since Macau was still struggling with considerable space problems at that time (Macau consisted of only three islands at the time), an artificial island was built to place the runway on it. The island is 3600 meters long and up to 415 meters wide; it runs roughly in a north-south direction. The apron , which is located on Taipa Island, is connected to the island on which the runway is located by two taxiway bridges.

The airport finally opened in November 1995.

Terminal building and apron

So far, only one passenger terminal has been built. The curved, three-story building is equipped with four passenger boarding bridges . It is designed for 6,000,000 passengers annually. More than 2,000 passengers can be handled every hour.

The facilities for arriving passengers, such as passport control and baggage claim belts, are located on the lowest level . Departing passengers are handled on the second level. There are several dozen check-in counters there . On the third floor there are a few catering facilities, but mainly the offices of the local airlines.

There are spacious bus stops on the sides of the building. Most of the passengers are driven from there in buses to their aircraft on the apron. The transfer from / to the Macau Ferry Terminal on the Macau Peninsula is organized for transit travelers from / to Hong Kong or Shenzhen . There is also the possibility for transit travelers to use the Air-To-Land Flow Express bus to mainland China.

The apron offers space for 24 aircraft parking spaces, ten of which are suitable for large aircraft such as B. a Boeing 747-400 are suitable. There is also a hangar and a small cargo handling building. The airport area does not offer any expansion possibilities on the landside.

facts and figures

Macau Airport has a runway that is 3360 meters long. It is connected to the apron and the handling buildings by two taxiways . The runway itself is equipped with ILS CAT II, so that operation is possible even in poor visibility.

When typhoons , the airport is closed.

Airlines and destinations

The most important local airline is the local Air Macau , which serves a dense route network in East Asia, but hardly flies long-haul routes. Another airline based in Macau was Viva Macao , which went bankrupt in 2010.

Most of the airlines flying to Macau are from China . Most of the flight destinations are therefore on the Chinese mainland.

Since the boom in low-cost airlines , the Malaysian Air Asia and the Singaporean Tiger Airways have also been serving the airport.

The Portuguese TAP Air Portugal used to fly to the airport of the Portuguese colony. However, these long-haul flights to and from Lisbon have been suspended.
