Coloane ( Chinese  路 環  /  路 环 , Pinyin Lùhuán ) or the Freguesia de São Francisco de Xavier ( Chinese聖 方 濟 各 堂 區) is a district or, based on the Portuguese model, a freguesia in the former concelho das Ilhas and a former island of Macau , which is now connected to the neighboring island of Taipa through land reclamation .

In recent years the population has grown by leaps and bounds; at the last census in 2011 Coloane had only 4262 inhabitants.

geography

Coloane is located south of the Macau Peninsula and east of Hengqin Island , which is part of the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province . In 2001 the island of Coloane was connected to the island of Taipa through land reclamation to form a larger island with an area of 21.5 square kilometers (as of 2018). The Freguesia de São Francisco de Xavier, which corresponds to the parish of the Capela de São Francisco Xavier and represents a statistical administrative unit , was congruent with the island of Coloane until the end of its island existence. Since the area is now only a statistical district on a larger island, "Coloane" and "Freguesia de São Francisco de Xavier" are used synonymously for the district.

The Coloane district has an east-west extension of four kilometers. The highest point is the 172 meter high Alto de Coloane ( Chinese疊 石塘 山). The eastern Hac Sa Beach ( Chinese黑沙 海灘, Portuguese Praia de Hác Sá ) and the southern Cheoc Van Bay ( Chinese竹 灣, Portuguese Baía en Cheoc Van ) are used by the population for recreation.

The area includes several separate settlements , with the original village of Coloane on the west coast of Coloane. In addition, there is another large settlement at the Kai Ho harbor near the northeast coast of the district, a settlement including a prefabricated building area on the east coast on Hac-Sa Beach and two settlements east and west of the Cheoc Van Bay to the south. In addition, there is a new construction and commercial area in the northwest of Coloane on the border with Cotai , which, together with the prefabricated buildings on Hac-Sa-Strand, differs from the other settlements in that it has no village character.

history

"Tam Kung" temple

Coloane was formerly known as Jiuhaoshan (九 澳 山 "Mountain of the Nine Bays"), Yanzaowan (鹽 灶 灣 "Salt Furnace Bay"), and Guoluhuan (過路 環 "Ring Road").

From the Song dynasty (960–1279) to the beginning of Portuguese rule in 1864, Coloane was a salt supplier for China . After Macau's expansion into an important trading port, Coloane lost its importance and was a pirate base until 1910, when Portuguese police officers freed several Chinese children from pirate hands on the island of Coloane under the fire protection of the Pátria and Macau gunboats .

With the opening of a 2.2 kilometer long road on an artificial isthmus to Taipa in 1969, the Estrada do Istmo, a stronger settlement of Coloane began. In 1999, Portuguese colonial rule ended and Coloane was transferred to the People's Republic of China as part of Macau .

Since 2001, a new land area called Cotai (formed from the words Co loane and Tai pa) has connected the previously individual islands. There a new city arose with numerous hotels , casinos , restaurants and shops. Film studios, theaters, an arena and exhibition and conference centers were also built. Further hotel and casino complexes are under construction or in the planning stage.

Attractions

Chapel of "Saint Francisco de Xavier"

The most famous sights include the Chapel of St. Francisco de Xavier , the Capela de São Francisco Xavier (聖 方 濟 各 聖堂). The chapel, built in 1928, is located on the west coast of the peninsula. Nearby is a memorial commemorating the victory over the pirates in 1910.

The chapel contains some of the most important sacred Christian relics in Asia, including the remains of 26 foreign and Japanese Catholic priests who were crucified in Nagasaki in 1597 , as well as those of some of the Japanese Christians killed during the Shimabara uprising in 1637. The chapel also houses a bone from the arm of Francisco de Xavier, who died in 1552 on the island of Shangchuan , 50 miles from Macau.

Other significant attractions in Coloane are a Taoist temple dedicated to the seafaring goddess "Tam Kung" (譚公廟), the old temple " Tin Hau " (天后 古廟), the statue " A-Ma " (媽祖 像) erected in 1998 , the Church “ Memory of the Sorrows of Mary ” (九 澳 七 苦 聖母 小 堂), the Museum of Nature and Agriculture (土地 暨 自然博物館), the Avenida de Cinco de Outubro (十月 初五 馬路), the park “Baía de Hác Sá ”and the Coloane Park.
