José Luis Zalazar (born October 26, 1963 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan soccer player who mainly played in the attacking midfield .

Career

Zalazar began his professional career in 1982 with his hometown club Peñarol Montevideo , with whom he won the Uruguayan championship in the 1982 and 1985 seasons . In 1986 he moved to the Mexican first division club Tecos de la UAG , where he was the top scorer of the Mexican Primera División in the 1986/87 season . After a year with the Tecos, he moved to the Spanish first division club FC Cádiz and returned for the 1988/89 season to the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara . In the 1989/90 season he played again in the Spanish Primera División , where he was this time under contract with RCD Espanyol . He found his longest stint between 1990 and 1996 at the Spanish club Albacete Balompié , to which he briefly returned in 1998 and where he ended his active career. With this club he won the second division championship in his first season in 1990/91 and, as a promoted team , managed a respectable seventh place in the Primera División in the 1991/92 season. In the same season, Zalazar was awarded the Trofeo EFE as the best Latin American player in the Spanish league.

National team

Zalazar took part with the Uruguayan U20 selection in the U20 South American Championship in 1983 and was vice-South American champion. During the tournament he was used four times (one goal) by coach José Etchegoyen . In the same year he reached the quarter-finals of the Junior World Cup in 1983 with the Celeste . Between June 13, 1984 and September 19, 1993 Zalazar completed a total of 29 international matches for the senior team , in which he scored four goals. He was also part of the Uruguayan World Cup squad in 1986 and was used in the preliminary round match of the 1986 World Cup in the 6-1 defeat against Denmark.
