José Núñez

José Núñez (* in Solentiname ; † March 5, 1880 in León (Nicaragua) ) was the first Director Supremo of Nicaragua .

Life

His ancestors were Guatusos (Indian tribe from Costa Rica); Fray Ramón Rojas brought him to León to study. He later studied medicine and surgery in Santiago de Chile . He then returned to Nicaragua and practiced as a doctor in León, where he also taught medicine at the university.

On March 10, 1834, he took up the post of Director Supremo . On January 20, 1835, the Cosigüina volcano erupted , terrifying the population of León. On March 23, 1835, he handed over his office to José Zepeda and became his deputy. Zepeda was murdered on January 25, 1837. Thereupon Núñez became Director Supremo again and had the head of the bodyguard, Braulio Mendiola, fussilated because he had killed José Zepeda.

He was then elected Director Supremo . He took up this office on March 13, 1838. His deputy was Joaquín Cosío. Consecutive were his general minister Pablo Buitrago y Benavente, JN Gonzalez and Hermenegildo Zepeda.

With a resolution of April 30, 1838, Nicaragua declared its exit from the Federal Republic of Central America and became an independent state. A constituent assembly was called, which published a constitution on May 2, 1838. On December 20, 1838, Tratado Oreamuno-Buitrago , a friendship and defense treaty and a contract for the sale of tobacco from Costa Rica to Nicaragua were signed with the government of Costa Rica .

Parliament awarded Núñez the title of Savior of the Fatherland ( Salvador de la Patria ).
