José Francisco de Trindade Coelho (born June 18, 1861 in Mogadouro , Tras-os-Montes , Portugal ; † June 9, 1908 in Lisbon , Portugal) was a Portuguese writer , journalist , lawyer , politician , magazine founder and educationalist . As a writer he was one of the most important native poets of Portugal in the 19th century. As a politician and educator, he dedicated himself to popular education .

Life

He was born in a town in the most remote region of Portugal, the Tras-os-Montes (Behind the Mountains). This region, in which he also spent his childhood and youth, shaped many of his native scripts. At first he received private Latin lessons from two priests. He later continued his school education in Porto . He began studying law in Coimbra . Since he needed money to study, he began to write for various magazines to finance his studies. During this time he married and had a son. As an author for the magazines, he used the pseudonym “Belistirio”, nobody should recognize the penniless student behind it. In 1885 he finished his studies and has worked as a lawyer ever since. He was also appointed as a civil servant and worked as a lawyer in local government. He moved to Portalegre where he founded two magazines. For the city of Ovar he ran unsuccessfully for parliament as a member of parliament . The last stop in his professional life took him to Lisbon. In 1895 he had finally settled there as a lawyer. For a short time he was still active as a critic in Sintra . Then he got a big legal case that caused a sensation all over Portugal and suddenly made him famous throughout the country as a lawyer and also as an author: he defended 33 political prisoners who had been deported to Cape Verde - and won the trial. Then he continued to write for various magazines, such as " Portugal ", " Novidades ", " Reporter " and founded the " Revista Nova ".

From 1890 to 1907 he was a city ​​councilor in Lisbon. His most famous works were the local volume of stories Os meus amores , 1891 and the reading book ABC do Povo , 1901, used in all schools of the time .

In literary terms he was a naturalist . Political educators and republicans .

At the instigation of the German Romanist Luise Ey , he wrote a highly regarded autobiography in 1902 . His work has not yet been translated into German.

On June 9, 1908, he committed suicide in Lisbon suicide .
