Alto Trás-os-Montes
The Alto Trás-os-Montes (formerly the historical region Trás-os-Montes , literally "Behind the Mountains") is a statistical sub-region of Portugal . It is part of the Região Norte and is divided into the districts of Bragança and Vila Real .
The sub-region borders on Spain to the north and east , the Douro sub-region in the south and the Tâmega , Ave and Cávado sub-regions in the west . The area of the sub-region is 8170 km². In 2001, 223,259 people lived in the sub-region. It consists of 14 circles:
