José de Vaquedano

Fray José de Vaquedano (born March 20, 1642 in Puente la Reina ( Navarra ), † February 17, 1711 in Santiago de Compostela ) was a Spanish priest, composer and bandmaster of the Baroque .

Life

José de Vaquedano received his training in his hometown from Simón Huarte Arrizabalaga and studied composition with Matías Ruiz in Madrid. He entered the Trinitarian order and was ordained priest in 1680. Fray José was deputy conductor at the royal monastery Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación in Madrid and from October 1680 Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela , he resigned from this post in February 1710 for health reasons.

Works

Of his work, five masses , fourteen psalm settings , the Magnificat , seven lamentos , motets and 49 Villancicos have survived , all of which follow a conservative style and are partly polyphonic , but also have a sound effect. Vaquedano mastered a multi-choir compositional style , in some of his works he used twenty voices in five choirs, the individual voices were often reinforced by instruments.
