Josef Šíma (born March 18, 1891 in Jaroměř , Bohemia , † July 24, 1971 in Paris ) was a French painter of Czech descent.

Life

He is one of the most important representatives of surrealism and later abstract painting after the Second World War .

Šíma co-founded the artist group Devětsil in Prague in 1920 . He moved to Paris in 1920 and joined the Surrealist movement. In 1926 he took French citizenship.

In 1921, Šíma made friends with the artists Amédée Ozenfant , Pierre Jeanneret and Albert Gleizes , who were then employees of the magazine " L'Esprit nouveau ".

In 1927 he began working with the future authors of Grand Jeu magazine , René Daumal , Roger Vailland and Roger Gilbert-Lecomte . Šíma became the artistic director of her magazine. He always remained closely associated with the artistic and literary avant-garde of Prague. In 1934 the group of " Czech Surrealists " was founded. Josef Šíma participated in documenta 2 in Kassel in 1959 .
