The company was founded by Josef Altmann junior in Perchtoldsdorf in 1854 . The property apparently belonged to Ms. Elisabeth März, and Altmann became the owner at the end of the 1880s.

Josef Altmann's company was officially registered in Vienna as a wax drawing factory in 1883 and converted into a company company in 1889. The public shareholders were Georg Lenneis junior, who came from a family of silk manufacturers, and his brother-in-law Anton Bittner. In 1891 the factory production of wax products and pitch torches began . The company had steam engines and a wax bleaching facility . Altmann also produced toiletries, for which he took over the distribution himself. The products were not only delivered within Austria-Hungary, but also distributed throughout Europe. Altmann received prizes for his goods at exhibitions.
