Blumenstetter was a pastor in Boll and Burladingen . Together with his friend and colleague Joseph Sprißler , he was a leader in the attempts at democratization in the two principalities of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . Blumenstetter had been a member of the state deputation and the state parliament since 1835 . From May 18, 1848 to September 18, 1848 he represented Hohenzollern-Hechingen as a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly, where he did not belong to any parliamentary group. In 1849, Blumenstetter founded the Hechinger March Association.

He is buried next to his companion Joseph Sprißler in the Heilig-Kreuz cemetery in Hechingen . The tombs resemble each other like twins and mean to the visitor that these two men were like brothers to each other for a lifetime. On Josef Blumenstetter's tombstone is the inscription “He who doesn't know love doesn't know God; because God is love. "
