Josef Eckert (born February 2, 1854 in Hollstadt , Lower Franconia ; † January 17, 1909 in Klagenfurt , Carinthia ) was a German meadow technician.

Professional

In 1891 he emigrated with his family to Klagenfurt , Austria , where, as a trained meadow technician, he was predestined to take over the meadow construction institute located there. He also became a teacher at the agricultural school in Klagenfurt and a meadow master builder for the Carinthian Agricultural Society. A major concern of that time was the reclamation of wet meadows , moors and wasteland . In addition to many smaller projects , he also managed larger ones , such as the drainage of the marsh in the Treßdorfer Moor in the Gail Valley . All of his hydraulic engineering measures represented improvements in the arable land. In pedology , the term melioration is used for this .

Hall monument

The memorial stone inserted as a base plate, broken several times, in a 270 cm high and window-like opening, cylindrical stone building on the northern edge of a swamp west of Gottesbichl , with spring water escaping from the base , reminds of the deceased: "THE MEN OF THE MEADOW TREE MASTER JOSEF ECKERT 1854 - 1908 ". On the east side of the barrel-shaped structure you can read the following text on a white marble plaque : “Dedicated to ALL THIRSTEND by August u. Emma HILDEBRAND 1903 ”. And on the west side there is a white stone tablet with the inscription: "Whoever does not want to see that drained meadows are worth more than swampy ones, is not worth the luck of being a free farmer ."

Familiar

With his wife Theresia he had five children: Maria, Anna, Rosa, Josef and Elisabeth. Josef Eckert died prematurely at the age of 55. He found his final resting place in Klagenfurt's Annabichl cemetery .
