Joseph Engel
Josef Engel (born January 29, 1816 in Vienna ; † April 3, 1899 there ) was an Austrian pathologist and anatomist .
Life
Josef Engel studied medicine at the University of Vienna , which he received in 1839 with the academic degree Dr. med. completed. From 1840 to 1844 he was assistant for pathological anatomy with Carl von Rokitansky . From 1844 to 1849 he was professor of topographical anatomy and from 1847 also of pathological anatomy and physiology at the University of Zurich . In 1849 he followed the call to the University of Prague , where he was appointed full professor of anatomy. After working in Prague, he worked from 1854 to 1874 as a professor at the Josephinum in Vienna. Engel was the first in Vienna to hold very well-attended microscopy courses. After the Josephinum was dissolved in 1874, Engel did not get a job at the University of Vienna due to his freedom of mind.
