Josef Gilgenreiner is a double bass player .

Life

Josef Gilgenreiner studied double bass with Josef Niederhammer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . During his studies he was a substitute in the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO) and in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera / Vienna Philharmonic. As a solo bassist he appeared in the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra . In 1996 he was solo bassist in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra founded by Claudio Abbado . Since then he has played with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , the Zurich Opera Orchestra , the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra , the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and others. In recent years he has appeared regularly in the Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich as a deputy solo bassist and as a solo bassist.

Josef Gilgenreiner's engagements led him to a large number of festivals, including the Rheingau Music Festival , the Salzkammergut Festival Weeks in Gmunden , the Festival de Musique de Menton, the Festival St. Gallen Styria, the Lenzburgiade and the Kyburgiade . He played with musicians such as Nicolas Altstaedt , Christian Altenburger , Fazıl Say , Daniel Schnyder , Paul Meyer and formations such as the Minetti Quartet , the Amar Quartet, the Ars Amata and many others. He works closely with the internationally renowned Carmina Quartet .

Josef Gilgenreiner was a lecturer in the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra and the Aargau Youth Symphony Orchestra. He also coaches the double bass section of the New Munich Philharmonic and the University Orchestra of the Zurich University (ZHdK). He regularly teaches students in Prof. Josef Niederhammer's class in Vienna. Since 2014 he has been a double bass professor (main subject) at the Kalaidos Musikhochschule Zurich. At the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna he held several master courses for double bass, and he also gives courses at the Klassiktage Akademie.

Gilgenreiner is double bass player (deputy, first desk) in the Musikkollegium Winterthur . Since 2015/16 he has also been solo bassist in the Le Concert Olympique in Belgium.

He is the artistic director of the Ammergau Alps Classic Days and the Benedictine Classic Days in Ettal Abbey. He was also the initiator and artistic director of the chamber music series "Serenata Oberammergau". In his own publishing house (Gilgenreiner Verlag) for sheet music he publishes new compositions and double bass literature.
