Josef Gočár
Josef Gočár (born March 13, 1880 in Semín , Austro-Hungarian monarchy ; † September 10, 1945 in Jičín , Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech architect and town planner. He is considered one of the protagonists of modern Czech architecture.
Gočár studied under Jan Kotěra in Prague and was later a professor himself at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague . One of his students here was Karl Kohn between 1918 and 1920 .
His buildings were initially shaped by Cubism , before he turned to a specifically Czech style, Rondo Cubism . At the end of the 1920s, his buildings took on functionalist forms without becoming one of the purists of this style. As an urban planner and architect, Gočár gave the town of Hradec Králové in particular its modern character.
Gočár exerted great influence not only through his architectural works but also as a university lecturer. From 1932 to 37 he was chairman of the Mánes Art Association .
