Jan Kotěra (born December 18, 1871 in Brno , † April 17, 1923 in Prague ) was a Czech architect , designer and graphic artist . He is considered a pioneer of modern architecture.

Life

Kotěra studied with Otto Wagner , the most important Austrian architect of the Belle Epoque , at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna .

Initially influenced by the Vienna Secession , his buildings increasingly took on functionalist forms under the impression of Frank Lloyd Wright . At the same time, he took up elements of Czech folk architecture , creating a specific architectural style that combines modern with folk elements.

Not only through his architectural works, but also as a university lecturer, he exerted a great influence on the next generation of Czech architects. Notable students included Josef Gočár and Bohuslav Fuchs .

Kotěra was a professor at the Prague Art Academy and founder of the architecture class there.
