Josef Gruber (medic, 1827)
Josef Gruber (born August 4, 1827 in Kosolup ( Bohemia ), † March 31, 1900 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor in the field of ear medicine.
Life
Josef Gruber studied medicine at the University of Vienna . In 1855 he completed his studies as a doctor of medicine and doctor of surgery. He then worked as a secondary doctor at the Vienna General Hospital for five years .
Autodidactically he acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of ear medicine, as this was not yet a separate subject at the University of Vienna at the time. In 1862 he was appointed " otologist of the kk general hospital ", and a room for an "oriatric outpatient clinic" was made available to him there. Together with Adam Politzer , he completed his habilitation in 1863 at the University of Vienna for theoretical and practical ear medicine.
With the support of Carl von Rokitansky , the two succeeded in creating an ear clinic at the AKH with 11 male beds for Gruber and eight female beds for Politzer. Both worked as unpaid extraordinary ordinaries and in 1894 were appointed to unpaid titular ordinaries of the Ear Clinic - the first university ear clinic in the world. At least in 1894 Josef Gruber was also active at the Leopoldstadt Children's Hospital.
Josef Gruber retired in 1898 after an honorary year. For his activities he was awarded the GVK mit Krone, the Order of the Iron Crown III. Excellent class and was appointed Commander of the Royal Greek Order of Savior .
Josef Gruber found his final resting place in the old Israelite section of the Vienna Central Cemetery .
