Josef Kolbe (mathematician)
Josef Kolbe (born May 11, 1825 in Vienna , † February 27, 1897 ibid) was an Austrian mathematician and university professor . He was rector of the Imperial and Royal Polytechnic Institute , today's Vienna University of Technology .
Life
Josef Kolbe studied law at the University of Vienna from 1842 to 1843 , then from 1844 to 1847 mathematics with Schulz von Straßnitzky at the Polytechnic Institute and with Josef Maximilian Petzval at the University of Vienna. In 1847 he became an assistant to Schulz von Straßnitzky. From 1850 to 1853 he taught mathematics and physics at the kk I. Staatsgymnasium Chernivtsi . In 1853 Kolbe succeeded Schulz von Straßnitzky as o. Professor at the Polytechnic Institute, where he was dean of the general department from 1868/69 to 1870/71, from 1873/74 to 1876/77 and from 1883/84 to 1894/95.
In the academic year 1871/72 he was elected rector of the Polytechnic Institute. During his term of office the implementation of the statute of April 10, 1872, which reintroduced the freedom to teach and study and renamed the institute to the Vienna University of Technology , fell.
From 1856 Kolbe was head of the secondary school examination committee and from 1870 the examination committee for the teaching post for gymnastics at secondary schools. From 1880 to 1887 he was a member of the Lower Austrian state school board , in 1889 he was appointed to the insurance advisory board of the Imperial and Royal Ministry of the Interior . In addition, Kolbe worked out a plan for the insurance technology course opened at the Technical University in 1895.
In 1869 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. phil. Hc) from the University of Vienna for his services to science and teaching. He gave the department of botany at the Technical University a herbarium that he had created . From 1876 to 1897 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine for the Realschulwesen , for 21 years he also headed the magazine for the higher education . In 1896 he retired from the Technical University.
