Josef Lorenzl (born September 1, 1892 in Vienna ; † August 15, 1950 ibid) was an Austrian sculptor and ceramist of Art Deco . He was a contemporary of Ferdinand Preiss (1882–1943) and Demétre Chiparus (1886–1947).

Life

Little is known about Lorenzl's early years.

He began his professional career as a sculptor in the Vienna Arsenal . He became famous for his chryselephantine sculptures made of bronze and ivory , for which he preferred strongly feminine forms. His statuettes often show graceful dancers with long legs and closed eyes, which he signed with “Enzl” or “Lor”. Occasionally the name "Crejo" appears on his pieces. The painter Crejo was friends with Lorenzl and painted some of his works. Lorenzl also designed ceramics for Friedrich Goldscheider in a studio on his company premises. He also worked for the porcelain manufacturers Hertwig & Co. and Keramos .

Lorenzl's works were very popular and were also exported abroad; he was one of the most sought-after Art Deco artists. One of his best-known works is the sculpture Gefangener Vogel by the dancer Niddy Impekoven from the 1920s.

After Lorenzl's death, his wife Anna (Njura) Lorenzl destroyed a large number of his characters.
