Life

Josef Lutschounig was the brother of the Reichsrat member and mayor of Maria Rain, Jakob Lutschounig . He attended the Pioneer Cadet School and was transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 17 when he was 20 years old. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1887, first lieutenant in 1890, captain in 1897, and now with infantry regiment 16. In 1910 he became a major, in 1913 lieutenant colonel in infantry regiment No. 74. In 1915, during the First World War, he became a colonel.

Lutschounig distinguished himself at the beginning of the war in Serbia, while he was in command of the 74th Infantry Regiment due to illness of the regimental commander. On September 6, 1914, the regiment had orders to march east via Ruma when Lutschounig received news that the Serbs had crossed the Sava at Šašinci . He let the regiment advance against the Serbs bridgehead and also ordered two artillery batteries to participate. After six hours of fighting at Šašinci, the regiment was assisted by the remainder of the 29th Infantry Troop Division. The war bridge of the Serbs was destroyed and the troops of the Serbian Timok Division on this side of the Sava were captured. In connection with the fighting against the Timok Division on September 6, 1914 near Šašinci, Lutschounig and Wilhelm Cavallar von Grabensprung were awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order three years later.

After the fighting against the Serbian army, Lutschounig was then used with his regiment against Russia. On September 1, 1915, he became commander of the 24th Infantry Regiment, with whom he was deployed on the Isonzo Front. For his work on this front he received the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class and the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order . On August 17, 1917, he was awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order by Emperor Karl in Villa Wartholz for breaking up the Timok division in 1914 . According to the statutes of the order, he was raised to the status of hereditary baron and received the title "von Felsenhof".

After the First World War, Lutschounig lived with his family in Maria Rain, where he died on September 12, 1923.

The Lutschounig barracks in Villach is named after Lutschounig .
