Josef Maurer (born January 16, 1853 in Asparn an der Zaya , † November 19, 1894 in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg ) was a Catholic priest, poet and local history researcher from Lower Austria .

Live and act

Josef Maurer was ordained a priest on July 25, 1877 after attending the Piarist High School in Vienna and the University of Vienna . After pastoral work in parishes in the Weinviertel , he worked for several years in Viennese parishes, where he also took advantage of the opportunity to study archives and libraries. This was followed by many years of activity in the Markthof parish and finally the takeover of the Deutsch Altenburg parish .

In addition to his profession as a priest, Maurer was also active as a poet. His aesthetic works, which are largely forgotten today, were all about pastoral care and immensely strengthened this and the associated popularity among the rural population.

Maurer's scientific and local history treatises in specialist and local history journals are recognized and still useful today. He also worked on the topography of Lower Austria and the regesta on the history of the Archdiocese of Vienna . Standard works are his books on Asparn an der Zaya, Schlosshof and Hainburg an der Donau . The extensive collection of Marian Lower Austria , a treasure trove of folkloric, historical and religious sources, is also of fundamental importance .

Maurer's importance as a Lower Austrian homeland researcher of the 19th century lies in his objectivity and in the discovery and successful processing of the source material.
