Josef Schleicher

Josef Schleicher (born April 14, 1960 in Elisawetgrad, Altai Region , Soviet Union ; † August 21, 2016 in Bergisch Gladbach , Germany ) was a Russian-German historian , journalist and mediator of Russian-German cultural history.

Life

Schleicher studied history, education and journalism at the State University in Barnaul . From 1986 to 1991 Schleicher was a correspondent for the German-language regional newspaper “Rote Fahne” (published in Slavgorod in 1957, the paper was named “Zeitung für Dich” in 1990) and from 1991 to 1998 editor-in-chief of the “Zeitung für Dich”.

The founding of the union society of the Russian Germans "Rebirth" in March 1989 was a high point for Schleicher of his participation in the autonomy movement of the Russian Germans. Schleicher was involved in the restoration of the German National Circle in the Altai region of Russia and published numerous articles on this topic. In 1992 his monograph “Germans in the USSR: Past and Present” and the textbook “History of the Russian Germans” (Russian) were published.

In 1998 he moved to Germany, where he worked first as a journalist (editor of the Russian-language newspaper “Ost-Express” and the German-language newspaper “DIALOGplus”) and from 2004 to 2015 as a project manager for the traveling exhibition “People on the way. Past and present of Germans in / from Russia ”of the compatriot of Germans from Russia .

Schleicher was a member of the International Association of Researchers of Russian-German History and Culture, an expert on the cultural history of Germans in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union .
