Josef Telfner (born August 23, 1874 in Meran ; † November 13, 1948 in Gufidaun ) was an Austrian painter from South Tyrol.

biography

Josef Telfner was the son of the businessman Johannes Peter Telfner and Christine Telfner geb. Demetz. In 1903 he married the former Dresden court actress Sidonie Jäckel and had two sons: Wolfram (* 1904) and Theo (* 1912).

He received his first painting lessons while attending high school from the South Tyrolean painters Wilhelm Anton Maria Settari and Constantin Bauer . From October 20, 1896 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Otto Seitz and in Heinrich Knorr's painting school . Then he attended Adolf Hölzel's painting school in the Dachau artists' colony .

In 1898 he came to Rome , where he became a member of the German Artists' Association . He went on study trips to France , Germany and Switzerland . Thereafter Telfner worked as a freelance artist in Merano. In 1903 he moved to Gufidaun, where he acquired the "Aichholzhof" and built a fruit and wine estate there. He visited the Klausner artists' colony several times , where he met Alexander Koester , among others .

The events of the First World War caused him a deep depression . He spent several months in hospitals in Hall in Tirol and Innsbruck. After the war he returned to Gufidaun. During the Second World War , the son Wolfram and daughter-in-law died in a bomb attack. In 1944 he retired to the “Aichholzhof”, where he died alone.

He dealt with oil and watercolor painting in the style of post-impressionism . Telfner was a member of the Meraner Künstlerbund from 1903 and of the Munich Art Association from 1925 . He took part in the Biennale d'Arte della Venezia Tridentina in Bolzano several times , including the one in 1938, which was thematically dedicated to the “glorification of the Mussolini era ”.
