Josef Zemp (born June 17, 1869 in Wolhusen , † July 4, 1942 in Zurich ) was a Swiss art historian and one of the most important students of Johann Rudolf Rahn .

Life

Josef Zemp was the son-in-law of the Lucerne goldsmith and antique dealer Karl Silvan Bossard . In 1894 Josef Zemp discovered supposedly medieval wall paintings in the Benedictine monastery of St. Johann in Müstair together with Robert Durrer , which they only later recognized as Carolingian. Zemp taught art history at the Universities of Freiburg im Üechtland and Zurich as well as at the ETH Zurich . From 1934 to 1942 he was President of the Federal Commission for the Preservation of Monuments .
