Ludwig Jolly

Ludwig Jolly (born June 14, 1780 - † December 8, 1853 ) was a German businessman and politician. From 1836 to 1849 he was the first mayor of Mannheim .

family

Jolly came from an old Huguenot family. His father was a pastor of the Walloons in Mannheim. His younger brother Isaak Jolly became Baden's Minister of Justice. Ludwig Jolly was married to Eleonore Alt (1786-1859). Their son Julius Jolly rose to the position of President of the State Ministry . Philipp von Jolly , another son, became a well-known physicist.

Life

At the age of fifteen Jolly joined the Electoral Palatinate-Bavarian fusilier regiment and became an officer. In 1809 he settled in Mannheim as a businessman. In 1830 he became head of the trade guild and a year later, after being transferred to the Chamber of Commerce, its first president.

Jolly was elected municipal councilor in 1836 after Heinrich Andriano's resignation as head of Mannheim. During his term of office, the port was expanded and Jolly campaigned for the connection between Baden and the Zollverein, which is important for Mannheim . By 1840 the state built the Mannheim – Heidelberg railway . With the opening of the main cemetery in 1842 and the first permanent bridge over the Neckar in 1845, the city also implemented important infrastructure projects. After the suppression of the Baden Revolution , the Baden state commissioner Jolly and the Mannheim municipal councils relieved of their offices in July 1849.

Honors

The city of Mannheim named a street after Ludwig Jolly and maintains his grave in the main cemetery as a grave of honor . This has a sandstone stele with a volute crown . The stele has corner acroteries with poppy seed capsules. It was restored in 1984.
