Joseph Anton Mahlknecht (born July 22, 1827 in Ortisei in Val Gardena ( South Tyrol ), † April 6, 1869 in Munich ) was an Austrian painter.

Mahlknecht attended grammar school in Brixen , studied classical philology and aesthetics at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck with Alois Flir , then he studied from November 16, 1850 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Johann von Schraudolph and Philipp von Foltz and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Joseph von Führich .

Mahlknecht went on a study trip to northern Italy and stayed in Rome for a long time , then came back to Munich around 1862, where he stayed until his death.

In addition to portraits, he created paintings on historical, mythological and religious subjects.
