Joseph Armand von Nordmann

Joseph Armand von Nordmann (born August 31, 1759 in Molsheim in Alsace , † July 6, 1809 in Wagram ) was a French colonel who entered imperial service as an opponent of the revolution and died in 1809 as an Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal near Wagram.

Life

He began his career in the French army, where he advanced to colonel in 1792 and commanded a regiment of hussars . Outraged at the execution of Louis XVI. he went over to the Austrians with most of his regiment.

As a lieutenant colonel he was transferred to the "Legion Bourbon" and later transferred to the 10th Hussar Regiment. With this he distinguished himself in 1799 at Stockach and Andelfingen , whereupon he was soon given command of the Dragoon Regiment No. 14 and he was promoted back to colonel. In 1805 he was major general and brigade commander in Italy.

On October 31, 1805 he was awarded the Military Order of Maria Theresa from Caldiero . As a field marshal lieutenant , he distinguished himself again in 1809 at the battle of Aspern . In the battle of Wagram he fell at the head of his troops in the battle for Markgrafneusiedl .

In his memory, the City of Vienna in the XXI. District a street called Nordmanngasse .
