Joseph Benjamin "JB" Hutto (born April 26, 1926 in Blackville , South Carolina , USA ; † June 12, 1983 in Harvey , Illinois ) was an American blues guitarist. Influenced by Elmore James , Hutto developed an expressive style on the slide guitar . Hutto was also known for his dynamic appearances.

Life

Hutto made his first musical experience with the Golden Crowns Gospel Singers in Augusta , Georgia . The group consisted of himself and his three brothers and three sisters. In the 1940s, he and his family moved to Chicago after their father, a preacher, died . There he taught himself to play the guitar and began his professional career with Johnny Ferguson and His Twisters . He was also often heard at the famous Maxwell Street Market. During the Korean War he served as a truck driver in the American Army.

In 1954, Hutto recorded his first album with his band, the Hawks . After some success, he largely withdrew from the music business. In the course of the blues revival in the 1960s, JB Hutto was rediscovered with his Hawks. The specialty of the new Hawks was that they performed without a bass but with two guitars and drums. With this band he performed in Turner's Blue Lounge and took on records again after a long time. Over the next 12 years he performed with different musicians, but the band was always called "The Hawks". After Hound Dog Taylor's death, he “took over” his band “The Housrockers” with Brewer Phillips and Ted Harvey, although they never made an official record, they were a dynamic live band. Recordings of a gig were released in 1991. After a year they separated and Hutto formed the "New Hawks", with whom he worked until his death. In 1977 Hutto moved to Boston , where he spent the last years of his life. He died in 1983 and was buried in Restvale Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois. In 1985 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame . His nephew, Lil 'Ed Williams learned to play the guitar from him, which he now plays with his band The Blues Imperials .
