Joseph Diatta

Joseph Diatta (born May 15, 1948 in Fadama ) is a Nigerien diplomat .

Life

Joseph Diatta was born in the village of Fadama, which later belonged to the municipality of Guéchémé, in the southwest of the Niger territory, which was then an overseas territory of France . He obtained a license in public law in 1970 and joined the Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in September of the same year. In 1971 he graduated in diplomacy from the Institut International d'Administration Publique in Paris . At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he became Director for International Organizations in 1974 and Secretary General in 1975.

From May 1979 to October 1982, Diatta was Niger's ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative of his country to the Organization for African Unity . On November 22, 1982 he was accredited to succeed André Joseph Wright as Niger's Ambassador to the United States . In May 1985 he also took over the post of Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York . Both tasks ended in June 1988. He was succeeded by Adamou Moumouni Djermakoye . Diatta moved to the People's Republic of China as ambassador in November 1988 , which he remained until February 1990.

He then returned to Niger and was initially chief of protocol for President Ali Saïbou . In December 1991 he became diplomatic advisor to Prime Minister Amadou Cheiffou . In July 1993 he moved to the cabinet of Foreign Minister Abdourahamane Hama . At the High Commissioner for the Restoration of Peace, which was responsible for the government's negotiations with the Tuareg rebels in the north of the country, he worked from October 1994 to May 1996, initially in the role of Secretary General and then as Interim High Commissioner. President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara , who came to power in a coup , appointed Diatta as his special advisor in May 1996. The diplomat was re-accredited on April 4, 1997 as Niger's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and on May 14, 1997 as Ambassador to the United States. He was replaced by Ousmane Moutari as permanent representative in June 1999 . He remained Ambassador to the United States until Aminatou Maïga Touré was appointed as his successor in May 2006.

Joseph Diatta is married and has four children.
