Joseph Ducreux went to Paris in 1760. He met the painters Maurice Quentin de La Tour and Jean-Baptiste Greuze know, especially Greuze exerted a great influence on him. Soon afterwards he turned exclusively to portraiture and copied well-known portraits of Pierre-Jean Mariette , Jacques-François Blondel , Jean Siméon Chardin and Jean-Jacques Rousseau .

In 1769 Ducreux was sent to Vienna to present the official portrait of the then 14-year-old Archduchess Marie Antoinette , who later became the wife of Louis XVI. to paint, which was considered a bit wooden. After two years in Vienna he became a member of the imperial academy and painted next to Maria Theresa and Joseph II the Archduchesses Maria Amalia , Marie Christine and Maria Elisabeth as well as other nobles at court. Back in France, Ducreux was appointed Premier peintre by Marie Antoinette and exhibited in the Salon de la Correspondence .

During his exile in London , his pictures were shown in the Royal Academy of Arts , but to no avail. After his return to Paris (1793), his friend Jacques-Louis David supported his further official career. In his apartment in the Louvre , which was made available to him free of charge, artists and writers from the "big world" frequented. In this late period, other portraits such as Louis XVI. as well as Maximilien de Robespierre and by Antoine de Saint-Just and by Julie Récamier .

In the present, Ducreux's self- portrait Portrait de l'artiste sous les traits d'un moqueur has become a well-known Internet phenomenon on the Internet , in which a rap text in English or a text in pseudo-Old English archaic language is often about his image is placed.
