Joseph Edward "Joe" Chapman (born August 22, 1984 in Chicago Heights , Illinois ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Chapman first played as a professional in Latin America in 2006 . After he had already played a season in Europe with Geofin Nový Jičín in the Czech Republic in the 2007/08 season , he went to the British Basketball League (BBL) for the Newcastle Eagles in 2009 , where he was able to celebrate his greatest successes so far. After Chapman won the regular season and the BBL Trophy with the Eagles in the 2009/10 season, in addition to these two titles, all other BBL titles were won in the 2011/12 season. Chapman was personally named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2011/12 BBL season.

Career

Chapman went to study at Marquette University in Milwaukee in 2002 , where he played for the college team Golden Eagles at that time in the Conference USA (C-USA) of the NCAA . With the later NBA All-Star and Olympic champion Dwyane Wade , the Golden Eagles won their division in the C-USA in 2003 and moved into the national NCAA finals up to the " Final Four " tournament, where they, however, in the semi-finals the Jayhawks of University of Kansas clearly subordinated. After Wade switched to the NBA as a professional , they could no longer follow on from these successes. In 2005, the Golden Eagles moved to the Big East Conference and qualified again for the NCAA finals, in which they were eliminated in the first round. In his third season as a "junior" Chapman was used just under 25 minutes per game. Although his hit rates increased somewhat with significantly fewer attempts to throw in his last season, he got a little less playing time in his last college season as a "senior" and only got a good six points per game. He lost all chances of a contract as a professional in a lucrative league in his home country.

After completing his studies, Chapman first went to Colombia and Mexico as a professional in 2006 . For the 2007/08 season he got a contract with the Czech club Geofin from Nový Jičín . This reached the final series of the Czech championship, in which one was clearly defeated against series champion ČEZ Nymburk . Then Chapman returned to South America again, where he played in Chile and again in Mexico. After a year he got a contract in the British Basketball League (BBL) with the Eagles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne . With the Eagles he was able to defend the title in the BBL Trophy cup competition and his team moved again as winners of the main round in the play-offs of the BBL, where they lost in the semifinals to the later title winner Everton Tigers and could not defend this title. In the following season, the team now operating as Mersey Tigers dominated the BBL and were able to eliminate the Eagles in the semi-finals of the cup competitions. In the championship, the Eagles lost the main round runner-up in the play-off semifinals against the BBL Cup winner Sheffield Sharks . In the 2011/12 season, the Eagles won the League Cup BBL Cup and the BBL Trophy in the finals against the Plymouth Raiders and also finished the main round of the BBL first with MVP Chapman. In the final of the play-offs they beat the Leicester Riders and were able to unite all the titles of the 2011/12 BBL season. In the following season 2012/13 the Leicester Riders did almost the same and won all titles of the BBL except for the Trophy. They won, among other things, the final in the BBL Cup and the play-off final against the second in the main round and defending champion Eagles.
