Joseph Eric D'Arcy

Joseph Eric D'Arcy (born April 25, 1924 in Melbourne ; † December 12, 2005 there ) was a Roman Catholic bishop and head of the Catholic Church in Tasmania from 1988 to 1999 .

Life

D'Arcy studied at Corpus Christi College in Werribee and finally on July 24, 1949 by Archbishop Daniel Mannix for priests of the Archdiocese of Melbourne ordained . He then studied philosophy at Melbourne University , Oxford University and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He was the first Australian-born graduate to receive a doctorate from Oxford University. In 1962 he returned to Australia and taught philosophy at Melbourne University for the next nearly 20 years.

On February 25, 1981, he was appointed Bishop of Sale by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination received his his predecessor Arthur Francis Fox on July 1 of that year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Melbourne, Thomas Francis Little , and the Bishop of Maitland , Leo Morris Clarke .

On October 24, 1988, D'Arcy was named Archbishop of Hobart .

On July 26, 1999, D'Arcy resigned from office on grounds of age. He spent his old age in Melbourne.

Joseph Eric D'Arcy died on the morning of December 12, 2005 at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, where he was being treated for pneumonia . He was buried in Hobart 's Saint Mary's Cathedral on December 19 .
