Joseph Fiala

Joseph Fiala (born March 2, 1748 in Lochovice , Bohemia , † July 31, 1816 in Donaueschingen ) was a Bohemian oboist , cellist and composer .

He received training as an oboist and cellist and in 1774 was employed as an oboist in the chapel of Prince Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein. In 1777 he moved to the Munich court orchestra. There he met Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , with whom he was to become a lifelong friend. Mozart said of Fiala's pieces: “I have to say that they are very pretty; he thought well. ”Presumably through the intercession of Mozart, Fiala became a member of Archbishop Hieronymus von Colloredo-Mannsfeld's chapel in 1778 . From then on he devoted himself more to playing the cello and was solo cellist in the first Salzburg performance of “ Die Entführung aus dem Serail ” in 1784 . In 1785 Fiala followed Mozart to Vienna . He was later engaged in St. Petersburg before he became a violoncello virtuoso for Prince Benedikt zu Fürstenberg in Donaueschingen in 1792 .
