Joseph Hayes (born August 2, 1918 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † September 11, 2006 in St. Augustine , Florida ) was an American writer who was best known for his novels, plays and screenplays.

Life

At the age of 13, Hayes went to a Benedictine monastery , which he left after two years. He graduated from Indiana University .

Hayes' first Broadway play was Leaf and Bough in 1949 . In 1954 his successful novel The Desperate Hours appeared , which was staged as a play in New York City on Broadway in 1955, and was made into a film by Hollywood . He wrote his last play, Calculated Risk , in 1962. In the same year, he and his wife Marrijane wrote the script for the Disney film Champagne in Paris ( Bon Voyage! ).

Hayes died of complications from Alzheimer's disease in a nursing home and was survived by three sons, ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
